Noise plot
Shishikari is a remote island where time seems to have come to a standstill. The place suffers from depopulation and declining industry. Keita Izumi grows black figs there. His successes put the island in the running for a government grant of 5 billion yen to support the rural economy. The islanders are enthusiastic, but that changes with the arrival of Mutsuo Omisaka. Keita and his friends Jun Tanabe and Shinichiro Moriya don't trust him. One night Keita's daughter disappears. Keita, Jun and Shinichiro kill Mutsuo and decide to cover up the murder to protect the island's interests.

An island is always too small for those who want to hide something. Noise is the film adaptation of a manga trilogy of the same name. A fig grower who is almost a symbol of the economic success of an island, becomes involved with his helper and the newly appointed police officer by stupid chance in the death of a mentally disturbed criminal who was brought to the island to work. The film lives on its ambiguous characters and their equally ambiguous actions, rather than on tension and violence. So the pace is fairly slow, but the gray zones that arise in the story make it all interesting enough. There is one more catch at the end, and this made the film stick with me for a while.
