“Man cannot live freely without embracing suicide and crime.”

A good starting point that is not used enough. Murder by Numbers could have been a very good movie, but the plot has too many illogical developments, uninteresting subplots and poorly developed characters.

The actors do their best and especially Gosling and Pitt are good. But the perfect murder has too many flaws and the police are on their trail very quickly. Especially at the end, the investigation is rushed through and the two thoughtful youngsters (well, leaving your own vomit at the crime scene is not smart) become emotional and jealous wrecks for no reason. The ending is also ridiculous. Too bad, the start was good and with these actors and a better script, there could have been more.

Great crime thriller.

The film is only carried by Sandra Bullock, a very good actress, who unfortunately has become a bit out of the picture in recent years. Roles like this (serious role, not a well-intentioned comedy) suit her perfectly and I haven't seen enough of her.

The still young Ryan Gosling, who plays a very arrogant kid and the role of Michael Pitt, make little impression and could have been random other actors.

At times the film was a bit simple, because it was soon known who the perpetrators were, which took the real tension out of it.

The film was more about investigating how and why, hoping for a misstep by one of the perpetrators to be able to arrest them with enough evidence.

With a very small twist at the end, this was a movie that was fun to revisit.

Boring.

I used to find movies that revolve around figuring out a murder a lot more interesting. Then in the 90s and 00s more and more of these kinds of movies kept coming out. Ultimately, that's where the fun ends, especially when it's all as tough as in Murder by Numbers.

Probably the most interesting element of this movie is the fact that it has a young Gosling in it. In a role that I did not immediately expect with him, but on his own and with the limited material that he is given, he does manage to form a supporting factor within the film. Bullock plays her cards a bit too safe and I thought Pitt was mostly colorless.

The stronger images of the film are in the finale and the conversations between Pitt and Gosling. In any case, the film feels a lot fresher once it is between the boys, but that makes you immediately notice how chewed up and tough it is as soon as it revolves around Bullock again. In this way it remains for a large part a very difficult and tough film to sit through. Especially since much of the plot is given away early on and the puzzle work remains very limited.

Visually it is also somewhat outdated and Schroeder takes little time to really communicate a scene in an atmospheric and decent way. Perhaps enthusiasts can do something with it, but I've been bored for most of the film. It just doesn't include enough to really draw the viewer to the screen by drawing out too much in too safe a way. That will always be a loss.
