This well-made crime drama gave Tyrone Power the chance to show that he was more than just a handsome guy. He is aided by an excellent cast and a compact script without weak moments. Power plays Bob Cain, whose father, Robert Cain Sr. [Edwin Arnold], a prominent stock trader [Edwin Arnold], is charged with fraud. Bob does whatever it takes to avoid a conviction and teams up with mafia boss Mickey Dwyer [Lloyd Nolan] to do so. Inevitably, he soon becomes involved in his criminal activities.

Hedy Lamarr plays Mickey's sweetheart Lucky, a nightclub singer who falls for Bob. Her rendition of the beautiful, melancholic 'This Is The Beginning Of The End' is a highlight, as is the beautifully filmed confrontation with Cain Sr. The friendly-looking Lloyd Nolan is an unusual choice as the gangster boss, but he too proves to be a hit in this somewhat cheap-looking but gripping crime film.

After James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, George Raft, and Humphrey Bogart in all those gangster films from Warner Brothers and other studios, this milieu might not offer much new anymore (although the impending film noir vogue would draw heavily from it), yet this film positively surprised me with its detailed plot, the good acting of the entire cast (including Dorothy Lamour before she became a lust object for Bob and Bing), the menacing atmosphere, and especially the sympathetic performance of Edward Arnold, whose appearance often condemns him to the role of a corrupt villain but who undergoes a remarkable transformation here from , well, corrupt villain to compassionate father. And I am becoming an increasingly big fan of both the star and the director. A strong (melo)drama of which the happy ending might not have been necessary, but oh well, I’ll judge this film based on what it delivered in the preceding hour and a half.
