Guilty or Not Guilty plot
Despite circumstantial evidence, Ruth Payne is sentenced to ten years in prison for the murder of her piano teacher. While in prison, Ruth befriends Maizie, a friend of bootlegger Joe. To free Ruth, Maizie gets a false confession for murdering the teacher of a woman who has poisoned herself and is dying. Ruth is then released and moves in with Maizie. Tony Halliday, the son of the prosecutor who convicted Ruth, becomes her boyfriend. Meanwhile, Joe and Brennan, another mobster, plan to falsely charge Tony with murder.
