Desperate filmmaker Osric Taylor dreams of making a very specific film: a Civil War version of Hamlet. But when the funding dries up, he agrees to accept the financial backing of Southern matron Hester Beauchamps, on the condition that he put in some zombies to make the film more profitable. But when Hester dies in the middle of the shoot, Osric then dresses up as Hester to cash the final check. As a result, he arouses suspicion among both the local police and the ambitious news reporter Shine Reynolds...
