Bill Kluggs is the first man from a small hamlet in West Virginia to enlist in the military during World War II. His father and his fellow villagers wave him goodbye and Bill is well on his way to being seen as a hero. After military training, he is stationed as a weapons instructor in his own village, far away from the real action that Bill was after. He becomes the target of ridicule among his fellow villagers. Then a bomber pilot falls ill and Bill must replace him on a covert mission.
