Elmer J. Butts (Buster Keaton) is in love with Hortense (Phyllis Barry), although he has never spoken to her. Elmer dreams of making a million so he can buy Hortense a Rolls-Royce and marry her. Together with his friend Jimmy Potts (Jimmy Durante), Elmer tries to make a fortune with a brewery, but during the Prohibition the police hunt for illegal alcohol distilleries.
