Three escapees from Devil's Island come to his shop for Christmas and use the excuse of free roofing to strip him bare. From the roof they watch a family drama unfold and they go to help the family and their shop. However, the underlying idea does not change.

Great farce, which slowly but surely loses steam towards the end and therefore lasts just a little too long. However, the first half is very strong, not least thanks to the unlikely story. But that's part of a farce, I think. Bogart and Ustinov are doing well in roles that are somewhat unusual for them. Very entertaining, for the most part anyway.

The first Christmas film for me this year and a film that I will definitely watch again.
Humphrey Bogart in particular shows in this film that he can also handle other types of roles well, the criminals did not come across as stereotypes and that is the big plus of this film. It may not be very believable, but it is certainly heart-warming and even quite daring and black towards the end.
I just found it downright strange that they decided to go back to prison and was quite surprised.
3.5 are definitely appropriate!

Good film in which three escaped convicts help a family running a shop with all kinds of things. Clearly based on a play (the film takes place almost entirely in the shop/home). Funny dialogues and entertaining situations. It resembles a farce, but it is not funny enough for that and the characters are portrayed too well (the latter certainly because of the nice dynamics between the three protagonists).
