"It has LAUGHS, PATHOS and ROMANCE!"

The wealthy Ferguson family plans to spend a quiet Christmas at their home in the southern English countryside during the war. A series of disruptions begins with the arrival of their married eldest daughter, Brenda, who has fled her London home after a fight with her husband. Then comes Millie, a member of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force who used to work as a maid at the house and is now housed there, and Bill, a Canadian soldier from a nearby base, sent by his colonel as punishment for fighting with British troops.
