Prince Desmond of Androvia and Princess Coralina of Vostiary have met only twice in person and are about to marry. The union was arranged by their grandfathers, the former kings, before Desmond and Coralina were even born. Because Androvia and Vostiary were once part of the same country that fell apart three hundred years ago due to a land dispute and mistrust on both sides, the arranged marriage was merely a measure to postpone the dispute until the next generation, as each successive series of kings in the three centuries was unable to reach a settlement directly. That mistrust extends to the current kings, Desmond and Coralina's fathers, Richmond and Winston. Although both Desmond and Coralina see the marriage as their royal duty, something changes when Coralina steps back from her role as princess and chooses to love a commoner, a plumber.
