Vernon Praiseworthy is a wimpy benefactor who - unsuccessfully - wears one job after another. One day, Vernon turns out to be the sole heir of his unknown uncle, a billionaire who was once a drifter. The only way for Vernon to inherit the fortune is to take the same train journey his uncle once did during the dark days of the infamous Depression. Simple enough, it seems. However, Vernon finds herself in an unadulterated adventure.
