1952. It is a late summer morning in New Hampshire, United States. The semi-annual meeting of the original founders of the newspaper takes place at the home of Richard Collins, a young newspaper publisher. They have set up an association, 'De Thieves', which supports needy people. Richard is the cousin of Flora Lungley, one of the four club members. This club is nicknamed “Thieves” for a reason. Emily Jordan, Jason Bosley and Philip Mullins also attended the meeting. They all have something to do with forgery, fraud or money laundering. Each of them has something on their mind. But then the anonymous benefactors discover that Richard has an appointment with the shady mayor Hubert Ruttner.
