Springen plot

The retirement home Sempa Vivax is nothing too crazy to make old age enjoyable. An imitation of a Third World War is just one of the festivities. It is therefore the final resting place of rich and eccentric people. If a politician wants a place, they see an opportunity to fend off the impending expropriation. The director sees something in the granddaughter of the politician.

Substandard film with an impossible plot, several scenes that make no sense, not even the best camera work and actors who make absolutely no impression, except perhaps Herbert Flack who looks like a playboy director.

Saw a fragment of this film a few years ago and should have left it at that.

The film may be little known (in the Netherlands), but the book on which it is based is apparently even less so. No one here is talking about it. I'm referring to 'Jumping out of the window should be considered useless' (the full title appears in the final scene next to the fire extinguisher)by Fernand Auwera. I first read the book in 1983 and again a few years ago. While watching this film it played through my mind because several scenes remained clear in my mind. This film follows the story from the book quite faithfully. I imagined Bellina to be a little more voluptuous - but hey, just find such an actress. Pipo and Axel are perfectly cast for me. I felt sorry for the lonely elephant (I hope she had others around her outside the movie). The location matches my depiction in the book and has been used well. I think the unreal acting of the heavily painted elderly people adds a nice tone of absurdity to an already absurd tragicomedy. I just see those sex scenes in the light of time. If the film had been made today, there probably wouldn't have been much to see. Then, because I enjoyed both the nice book and this film adaptation, I give it a stubborn 3.5 ***.

Nice eighties. Filming is no longer done like this. The imperfections make the film. Furthermore, many nods to other things. E.g. the link to the album Tintin in Africa with the elderly person who would like to shoot an elephant. Another nice role for Emly Star who had some disco hits in the 80's. The film also caused a riot at its premiere at the Toronto film festival. It was even rejected at the Academy awards for best foreign film. The simplicity and cliché make the film.
