The once wealthy Lorrimore family is on the brink of bankruptcy unless Brighton, the eldest son, marries wealthy Edith Gilbert. However, when Brighton marries another girl, Phyllis, and takes his bride home, the reception is not warm. Phyllis also encourages her husband to pursue his dream of becoming a writer, while her mother-in-law wants her son to pursue a career.
