Sing and Like It plot

"Any girl with good strong adenoids can do the same thing!"

T. Fenny Sylvester is a gang leader, but he's stupid and suffers from some kind of maternal complex. Annie Snodgrass is a singer. Sylvester hears Annie sing an ode to motherhood and immediately wants to help her make a Broadway show. That's why he blackmails Adam Frink, the city's leading critic, to give her show an excellent review so that it immediately becomes a hit. But then Sylvester's own mother shows up, straight out of prison.
