Scattergood Meets Broadway plot

Scattergood Baines is a popular shopkeeper and philosopher in the mythical town of Coldriver. Although Scattergood doesn't really have anything to do in the big city, he travels to New York anyway. He meets David Drew there and tries to help him. David is an aspiring playwright who has fallen victim to JJ Bent and HC Bard, two cunning con artists on Broadway. Scattergood also gets into trouble himself, but he can count on the help of blond stage actress Diana Deane.
