Revizor plot
Khlestakov is a young flamboyant crook passing through a Russian town, where the local authorities are waiting for a government inspector from St. Petersburg. Due to a misunderstanding, the notables of the city think that Khlestakov is that inspector. He then takes advantage of the situation by taking bribes and flirting with the mayor's daughter and wife.

I recently watched Köpenick's Captain, a real life portrayal of the Revisor, the play by Nikolaj Gogol of which this film is an adept. Now I don't do comedy satire very well so I was prepared for the worst. But I had a high regard for director Vladimir Petrov for his film adaptation of the Battle of Stalingrad, so there was certainly hope.
It was a vain hope. We see the most repulsive and pot-bellied actors that could apparently be found, not to mention the mayor's wife and daughter. The impostor Khlestakov was the only pleasant thing to watch in this farce. Excuse me, satire.
