Unassuming Jane Benson spends her life in her elderly uncle's dilapidated mansion in the countryside. After feeling guilty about her relationship with her uncle in poverty and her commitment to stay with him until he dies, Jane is later shocked to learn that her uncle has left her a huge fortune. One might think that with such a windfall a dream come true, but not so with Jane. Things immediately go wrong when her fiancé, local doctor Freddie Jarvis, wants to focus on his career. He refuses to leave his patients to travel all over Europe with Jane for pleasure. Angry, Jane goes her own way, but she's surrounded by gigolos who are more interested in her money than her...
