Head South plot

"All you need to change your world is three chords and an attitude..."

Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand, 1979. Angus is a gullible teenager, aware of his class privileges, his long hair and, above all, his lack of knowledge of music. During a two-week relationship with his father, he is drawn to the underground post-punk music scene. With the support of his girlfriend Kirsten, Angus endures self-doubt, ridicule and a family tragedy to take the stage for the first time.

1979, Christchurch, New Zealand. The heyday of the so-called punk scene is over, but it has inspired a whole generation of young people to buy a guitar or a drum kit and start making music without formal training. Angus [Ed Oxenbould] really wants to take that step, but is struggling with threshold fears. When he finally enters a record store, owner Frasier [Jackson Bliss] helps him on his way. He even arranges a gig for Angus' band Daleks. But Angus has no connection at all. In fact, he doesn't have a bass guitar and has never played one! Some knowledge of the music and the associated culture is an advantage to fully enjoy it. Oxenbould shines in the leading role and Benee (as the guitarist) does a creditable imitation of Nico, who can be heard with 'Femme Fatale'. A pleasantly nostalgic comic musical drama with a moving denouement.

Admittedly, when it comes to post-punk, I think you have to try really hard to screw it up. Jonathan Ogilvie absolutely does not succeed in that. In fact, a day later I can't get this film out of my head and immediately want to show it to my Lief and my best friend!

And yes, I could have enjoyed this even without references to my favorite genre. However, the music gives the whole thing that little bit of extra energy to completely captivate me. It's a better movie than Awaydays. I think. But there it was the atmosphere that captivated me anyway, which was formed by a combination of camera, light and location and how they merged with the soundtrack. Not many people walk away with that movie, and I get that. But perhaps this story is a bit more infectious, for example because Angus is a more sympathetic main character than Carty. His goal is also easier to relate to, which helps too.

Anyway, why am I so crazy about Head South and where on earth does that sky-high figure come from? Well, in this piece I will explain my opinion in more detail.

Disappointment. Nice setting at the end of the 70s and not in England but in New Zealand this time and the music is wonderful (I immediately feel like listening to Wire or Public Image Ltd again). Only in terms of plot I didn't think it was all that special. A film about young people and growing up and especially about pretending to be better than you think you are, with all the shyness and shame involved. In the end it turns out everyone does that, not just the main character. But it bothered me a bit and I couldn't really sympathize with Angus. Also because of the somewhat flat interpretation for Oxenbould. The guy from the record store was a lot more endearing, as was the girl from the drugstore. The ending with those deceased parents will probably be autobiographical, but it really came out of nowhere and didn't do anything for me. 2.5*.
