HalloWiebe plot
Security guard Wiebe is given the assignment to secure an amusement park the night before Halloween. Wiebe unsuspectingly accepts the job, but what he doesn't know is that a mysterious person has evil plans for the park that night. Will Wiebe and his brand new team be able to save the park?

A charming children's film with remarkably good acting and a fun concept, although the directing duo of Jasper ten Hoor and Ivan Hidayat could have easily pushed themselves a bit further visually. For instance, the theme park (Toverland) isn't fully utilized, and the creativity in terms of menace remains rather monotonous, but at its core, HalloWiebe feels effectively and well-intentioned. It doesn't drag on too long, has a good heart, and maintains a healthy pace. The unfortunate thing is that Duncan Meijering's character, towards the end, doesn't seem to have learned much from his own failures and must rely mainly on external factors; there's essentially no change in that after the final minute. This isn't his fault, by the way, as he undoubtedly makes a lot of fun.

Halloweenbeis a great Dutch film for children. And—unlike, for example, the sugary-sweet Gabby's Dollhouse, which I saw as a trailer in the cinema—it's also enjoyable for adults.
Wiebe is—naturally—a loser living on his very last euros. An antihero, as we've seen before. He has an apartment below which his landlord lives. In an American production, this would be the landlady; in the Netherlands, it's almost unheard of for your landlord to live in the same building. On the street, he's harassed by three punks who look like they've stepped straight out of the opening scene of The Terminator ("wash day, nothing clean, right?"). His assistant is a tech whiz whose mechanical skills, you can already sense, will serve as deux ex machina. In short: up to this point, the film seems to have been written by ChatGPT based on existing American clichés.
But it doesn't end there. Of course, protagonist Wiebe is presented with a golden opportunity, which he eagerly seizes, without knowing what he's getting himself into. He decides to assemble a team of characters he's encountered earlier in the film. Incidentally, none of them can really act.
So much for the sourpuss, because despite almost every idea being a bit of a rip-off, the film is incredibly enjoyable. The robots, in particular, are beautifully done. Yes, if you look closely, you'll see stuntmen walking on stilts, but the sounds and lighting are truly stunning by Dutch standards. Naturally, you immediately think of Transformers, but in the end, the film largely borrows from Iron Man. But that's not a bad thing. The buildup to the final showdown drags on a bit, but who cares.
Well-deserved 3 stars for neat, unpretentious entertainment.
