"The girl who always stood out is finally getting the chance to fit in."

Samantha Mackenzie (Katie Holmes) is the daughter of the President of the United States (Michael Keaton). From birth, she has spent her life in the spotlight, closely followed by bodyguards who have to protect her. Samantha has had enough of this lifestyle and, like all her peers, wants to be free and enjoy life. Her wish seems to come true when she leaves the White House to go to college. A nice story in itself, but it was all too superficial for me. Come on, it's a teenager. She was much too accommodating and I really should have kicked the system a bit more even though she was the president's daughter. It was all a bit too bland. And the bit of emotion that was allowed to shine through wasn't really conveyed very well by Holmes. Right after she is in the car and just finds out who James really is. I thought that was a strong moment. The fairytale effect that you get to see in the beginning and at the end also didn't fit the whole thing. It actually gives it a rather childish look. I don't think the film is bad at all, but it does have a lot of weaknesses in my opinion.

First Daughter

Don't waste too many words on this film. It's all very well-behaved and what the director (Forest Whitaker!) wanted to show with this film is unclear. Every cliché is neatly crossed off and the chemistry between the actors and the dialogues are also not great. Holmes is still doing her best and Keaton also has a funny role. Their joint scenes are therefore the few bright spots. Blucas is dramatic and there is no chemistry with Holmes. What a very wooden display. Just like the film that could have used some risk and flair.
