Due Date is a reasonably nice road trip, which is also short enough to never get bored. I wouldn't say it's terribly funny, but the Downey Jr./Galifianakis combination is cool, and every so often absurd or over the top things happen, so it stays nice and light for ninety minutes. Robert Downey Jr. puts down a rather stressed and unsympathetic bastard, and therefore deviates a bit from his usual laid back sarcastic characters, and Galifianakis is um, well, Galifianakis. I honestly don't know if the guy is just being typecast or a one-trick pony. But he is good at the kind of role he always plays, and so is here. In the end it all runs pretty standard, but I don't really have much trouble with that right now. Visually, it also looks nice and fresh. 3*

Two men who do not know each other and who do not like each other and who are forced to make a long journey together is not an original feature for a film. Predictability is therefore an issue. And that's right. The outcome is predetermined. Still, the film runs well, the acting is nice and there is even some nice humor in it. So this film is a good snack.

Phillips.

As far as I'm concerned, a film that is on a level for him during his somewhat earlier projects. I never fully understood the hype surrounding him as a director, but later on he managed to deliver his fair share of good titles. However, Due Date is not one of them, rather an attempt to repeat the success of The Hangover.

So a lot is being pulled out for that. Galifianakis returns as does the arrival of a very famous actor. The story is again adventurous and the humor is almost the same. So what exactly works less? That's the narrative, which just can't hold back the unique twist that The Hangover had a year earlier. The movie wasn't brilliant either, but that made it a bit fresher.

Due Date is actually rather a clunky Todd comedy in a different setting. The film runs well, but the humor is especially annoying. Even the most spectacular scenes do not keep up with the viewer. I also think the role for doing Galifianakis was very and above all too boring. An actor who can be used for fun things that are hardly used properly.

In this way the film runs like a train without containing a moment that manages to catch on well. The jokes have been rehashed, the course is not challenging enough and all in all a film that, despite the bombastic intentions, you will be completely lost in no time. It's still a shame, but perhaps it's better to put Phillips at the helm of films that also have a more dramatic slant.
