A 'Hungarian' Ufa film with Zarah Leander, Willy Birgel and Paul Hörbiger. Well, Hungarian, shot almost entirely in the Babelsberg studios, with some sparse footage of Budapest. But Zarah Leander is at her best here and she sings the hit song 'Von der Puszta will ich träumen' and the quite frank for that time 'Kann die Liebe sünde sein?' That's what you watch this film for, not for the story and that creepy Willy Birgel, with his mustache and his old face, although they thought differently about that at the time. Here he plays a rather arrogant aviator, a Luftwaffe pilot who later dropped his bombs on Rotterdam. But that's besides the point. Here he drives around in a fancy sports car and chases Leander, who wants to get rid of her husband, a rather caricatured role by Paul Hörbiger.

Oh well, it's not a great movie, but it's entertaining. That Hungarian link was not accidental. Of course, there was always that old bond of the former Austria-Hungary and in the 1930s Hungary was virtually the only ally of Nazi Germany. (East) Germans had a thing for Hungary. Even after the war. People go on holiday to Lake Balaton en masse and Gulash soup is still high on the Speisekarte.
