Would you kill for a good story? If you're James Cooper, a 28-year-old editor with literary dreams, you're doing it. His girlfriend has just been crowned the spokeswoman for the 'New America' New York literary intelligentsia, while James wastes his days editing third-rate books in a dark basement somewhere in Chicago. After his first book flopped and his manager dumps him, he has no future at all. But when his girlfriend's body is found under the bedroom window, he is immediately inspired to write.
