"An engaged interfaith couple are about to have their parents meet for the first time over a Shabbat dinner when an accidental manslaughter gets in the way."
David's parents and his fiancée, Meg, are about to meet for the first time at a Shabbat dinner on New York's Upper West Side. The gathering is turned upside down when a death, or possibly even a murder, occurs. Because Meg's Catholic parents could arrive at any moment, the family dinner quickly turns into a major disaster.

The Sabbath is a weekly Jewish celebration that is usually observed with family. A Sabbath dinner is part of the celebration, and in Bad Shabbos, a family gathers for dinner. Due to an unexpected event and the visit of Catholic relatives by marriage, the dinner does not proceed peacefully.
Director Daniel Robbins turns this premise into a film filled with subtle, dark humor. The joke density is high. Bad Shabbos derives its humor from interpersonal awkwardness, the laconic approach to the rules surrounding the Sabbath, the clash of cultures, and, of course, the unexpected event. Fun characters shape the whole picture. The characters' traits vary and are considerably exaggerated. This diversity creates funny contrasts, mutual misunderstanding, and hectic scenes.
The film is largely set in an apartment and has a theatrical feel. So, lots of spoken word. Don't worry, because the dialogue is sharp, ironic, and fired at the viewer almost incessantly. An excellent cast brings the script to life. The cast harmonizes well and creates a pleasant dynamic. Bad Shabbos is an enjoyable and funny film that, into the bargain, also teaches you a bit about Jewish culture.
