Aller/Retour plot

Experienced truck driver Erika is on her way to Bordeaux with her trusty four-wheeler. During a stopover in Paris, she is shocked when she discovers that a man is hiding in her truck: the African Idy wanted to hitch a ride across the border. Due to the interference of a third party, the situation escalates and Idy is hit hard. Erika can't help but take him back on board to save his life. It soon turns out that the two complete strangers have more in common than either of them could have ever imagined.

A nobody. This can also be seen in the interest in the film during its screening in the cinema, the recognition afterwards and the interest here on the forum. I knew this in advance, because I ignored this and have now viewed it for opportunistic reasons.

The story is very forced and very clichéd. I also found it very illogical at times. They can't vent each other, but they can't let go of each other either. The reason for the latter is unclear and too artificial. It doesn't benefit the film, on the contrary. And although I can like Ruth Beeckmans as a person, as an actress I am much less convinced.

I have no idea whether you should see this as a drama. Actually not, because the lightness takes away all the sting, although the nomadic existence of refugees is razor sharp. Then it doesn't matter. Not good, but that was no surprise...

Shared dreams of being accepted. In 'Aller/Retour' (2023), lesbian trucker Erika (Ruth Beekmans) finds an African stowaway in her truck. Suddenly she changes from someone with opinions about refugee issues to a person who has power over someone else's life. Can she be so callous as to leave this Idy (Welket Bungué) to his fate!?' Aller/Retour' (2023) beautifully sketches the friction between two opposites, both experiencing the consequences of a globalized world in which profit motives outweigh the human dimension. They fight out tensions with each other over alleged differences, but actually the real pain lies in Erika's employer forcing unreasonable rides and Idy's hopeless situation. It's just a shame that 'Aller/Retour' (2023) takes implausible paths too often to hammer home its own message at the expense of the convincing character development of two complex individuals.
