A Petticoat Pilot plot

When a partner in their small trading firm in Cape Cod dies, Shad Gould and Zoeth Hamilton adopt his daughter Mary-Gusta. After a few years, the two decide that Mary should be educated properly and send her to an exclusive school in Boston, telling her that her father has left her a large fortune. In Boston, Mary-Gusta meets Crawford Smith, but their happiness together is threatened when she discovers that he is the son of Edgar Fuller, a scoundrel who had run off with Zoeth's wife and stolen his money.
