First basketball, where she and her high school team became champions of Tennessee, then athletics. At the 1956 Olympics, Wilma Rudolph won bronze in the 4 x 100 m relay. In Rome 1960, she became the first American athlete to win three gold medals: in the 100 m, 200 m and 4 x 100 m relay. She was also eight times the American champion.
