The Scarecrow plot
The good witch gives a scarecrow a feather on his hat, giving him a human form. She warns him that without the feather, he will be transformed into an ordinary scarecrow again. The scarecrow falls in love with the orphan girl Polly. She saves her few pennies to buy her freedom and that of three other orphans from the spiteful Earl Grisham. However, he does not intend to let Polly go without a fight and does not shy away from any means of stealing her savings. The enamored scarecrow rushes to her aid.
