It is noticeable that many people are very moderately enthusiastic or downright negative. As far as I'm concerned, this is a Disney(/pixar) production that is head and shoulders above anything they've released in the past twenty years. The setting already scored points beforehand, but otherwise I enjoyed the colorful characters and clans. Billy Connoly couldn't speak often enough as far as I'm concerned. It's been a long time since I've laughed so hard at a Disney movie and it's been in the simple things like the dogs at dinner or the pranks of the triplets, but also the downright absurd situations like the battle in the throne room and the stereotypical Scottish insults thrown at everyone's head. The story may be pretty typical of Disney, but it just works. This is a story I've been craving a bit. Especially when I saw that disgusting Frozen. Brave is a pleasant return to the roots with attention to atmosphere and mysterious elements, but at the same time has a tough female protagonist (maybe once in a while) and for a change the whole love element, that was always so obligatory, once a big lurking running. The only thing that bothers me is that I keep wondering what Brave would have looked like if everything had been drawn. Those computer animations remain an eyesore, but that's the only downside I can think of. Furthermore, Brave could end up in my top 5 of Disney movies.

“There are those who say fate is something beyond our command. That destiny is not our own, but I know better. Our fate lives within us, you only have to be brave enough to see it.”

Nice. Brave is certainly not original, but that is more than made up for with humor, some sentiment, fantastic animation images and strong voice actors. Scottish sounds beautiful anyway, and if you add the voices of McDonald, Connolly and Thompson to that, you've got gold in your hands. Brave has little music, but the songs in it work very well.

Animosity between four Scottish clans has cooled since they united under a democratically elected leader. Merida [Kelly Macdonald] is the daughter of the current chieftain Fergus [Billy Connolly], and according to tradition, he should marry the firstborn son of the three remaining clan chiefs. Although Merida's mother [Emma Thompson] has been preparing her for this for years, Merida doesn't like it at all and devises a ruse to break this tradition. An encounter with a witch [Julie Walters] offers Merida a chance to teach her mother a lesson, but the idea backfires, leaving Merida to fight for her own life... and her mother's. Brave animation film with the usual central message about the importance of family with strong voice interpretations and an original setting. A smooth scenario with some strong action scenes and many successful jokes. A gem that won both a BAFTA and an Academy Award for Best Animated Film.
