Bouchra plot
Bouchra, a 35-year-old Moroccan coyote and filmmaker, lives in New York, where she struggles with her creativity. Her immigration to a big city also gives her food for thought. She wants to talk to her mother, Aïcha, about her sexual orientation, a topic that strongly influences their relationship. Aïcha is a cardiologist and still lives in Casablanca.

Beautiful animation made with visibly a lot of love and attention. The story is simple: a young filmmaker looks back on her life, and in particular on the difficult relationship with her parents, who could not accept that she is attracted to women, and on the new friendships and loves she found in her new hometown of New York.
The narrative structure is somewhat fragmented. It is partly memory and partly scenes from the film Bouchra is making about her life. I found that quite refreshing and actually the film's biggest plus. The story isn't all that captivating—or at least, you've probably seen something like this a thousand times before. In an ideal world, there would be no dramatic coming-out films, but apparently, they are still necessary. The film felt quite autobiographical; I don't know if it actually was.
Currently showing is also La petite dernière, with the same theme, about a young woman with a French-Algerian background who goes through roughly the same thing as the Moroccan Bouchra. Add another one and they can write another insightful essay in the Groene Amsterdammer. I can't wait.
