Even as a child, I found this overly sentimental and ugly. The idea of a little boy seeking refuge with a sea creature reminded me a little too much of Free Willy, and I can still remember hoping a giant shark would swim by and snatch the characters. I found Flipper (a weak bridge) unpalatable. Not worth reviewing.

I'd never watch it again now, but I used to love it. There were some sad moments, and as a child, I even felt sorry for Flipper.

Entertaining family film.

A predictable, flat children's film that explores the relationship between humans and wild animals. Projects like this will never be realized these days, so as a film buff, it's quite enjoyable to revisit it. That, and a young Elijah Wood, because director Alan Shapiro offers little motivation to actively derive satisfaction from it. A tired script, mediocrely developed characters, and an unfinished relationship between Wood and the dolphin are the main drawbacks. Fortunately, the exotic setting makes for some beautiful images, and it doesn't drag on too long, but that's about it.
