"To eat or to be eaten"
Ghouls are monsters that look like humans, but can only feed on humans to survive. The CCG (Contra Ghoul Commission) special police unit tries to protect humanity from the ghouls, forcing them to live a hidden life. Kaneki is a half-human, half-ghoul hybrid who refuses to eat human flesh. He lives and works in a coffee bar with some sympathetic ghouls. They only feed on corpses. One day they are visited by De Gourmet, a ghoul with a preference for specially prepared human meat.
