A kind of cross between The Running Man, Battle Royale and The Condemned. The problem here, however, is that the three films mentioned are all better than The Tournament.

In the first place, the characters get a mediocre and poorly developed depth. Do it right, or don't do it I would say here. Robert Carlyle plays a striking character as a priest who finds himself in a battle between hitmen. He still does the best, but has a rather thankless role. Rhames is really bad, Hu is also mediocre, but her appearance makes it more pleasant to look at.

Fortunately they manage to make the action quite spectacular and they are not afraid to show the blood and the rest hard. It's just a shame that there isn't much tension in it. The action itself makes it all entertaining, but it's just rather poorly developed.

Badly executed action movie with a mediocre cast, bad characters, a ridiculous role by Carlyle and a clumsy execution. Characters suddenly appear in locations where they can never be that annoying American at the end for example and the course is extremely predictable, although you have that with these kinds of films. The idea could have made for an entertaining film, but the execution hinders this.

Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen!

You know the case of, better in your head than something actually is? A few years before I started reviewing, I saw The tournament. In my opinion a very entertaining film in the style of Condemned, which, just like this title, was almost bursting at the seams with action. Although I still don't give an insufficient score with this review, this time it struck me much more that we are dealing with a B-production here. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, on the contrary, but especially in terms of camera work and storyline it could have been a bit better.

Not that a storyline is important in these kinds of titles, but it shouldn't really disturb either. For example, I did not find the Donald Duck-like storyline with a certain priest very interesting and also a bit poorly invented and elaborated. I also have to agree that as otherfool mentioned a few posts above me, the scenes between the billionaires do look silly. I also thought it was a pity that scenes were sometimes filmed a bit fleetingly (especially the first scene in the hotel room ) so that I didn't always get everything right. The characters also stick a lot less than in a production such as Smokin aces for example.

There's still plenty of entertaining action, though, that's captivating enough to get a pass. The playing time, which is still less than 1.5 hours, also makes it accessible to quickly grab a movie. With the mind at zero still pretty good fun, but I'm not going to hand out more than a 3 * just achieved. Mainly fun for the action fan, who actually swallows everything.
