The Sleepover plot
"To rescue their parents, they need to get a clue."
Two children discover that their mother is a former thief in witness protection. The mother is kidnapped and forced to do one last job. The two children now go on an adventure together at night to save their mother.

Mediocre action comedy that is too childish for adults. Purely a movie for the 6 to 12 age group. They likely have less of an eye for the very weak plot, the mediocre execution, and the far from original storyline. The humor is okay, although there will certainly be viewers who find some characters annoying. Visually, the film looks reasonably good. Cheap kids' movie. 2.0

The Sleepover is a family film in which a group of children finds themselves in a grand adventure. Naturally, the children are nerds and outsiders who, driven by the adventurous challenges, step outside themselves and demonstrate resourcefulness and courage. When such a film focuses heavily on humor, it is often watchable. Fortunately, The Sleepover does just that. There is hope.
It starts off quite nicely with a few funny dialogues. The humor otherwise stems mainly from the precarious situations the children constantly find themselves in. Fun in principle. However, the comedy extracted from the tense situations quickly runs out of steam. The appealing premise of a group of children facing all kinds of challenges soon devolves into repetition.
Because the film tells the story in two parallel storylines, there is variety in characters and situations. One storyline follows the children in their search for the adults. The other follows the adult characters who desperately need the children's help because they behave so stupidly. A terribly distracting element in the adult storyline is Ken Marino. Rarely have I seen someone try so hard to be funny when they absolutely aren't.
The Sleepover has a few fun scenes. The rest is bland, clichéd, and boring. I suspect the youthful target audience enjoys it.

A simple adventure film with little risk and few noteworthy moments—or rather, not a single noteworthy moment. Now, director Trish Sie's career isn't exactly known for grand achievements, and films like The Sleepover are unlikely to change that. Well-acted and delivered at a reasonable pace, but put together without originality or any drive to do so. The filmmakers also make few attempts to bring this far-fetched concept together in a somewhat believable way, falling largely into caricature. It might have worked if it had been presented with some humor, but with this tame execution, that is unfortunately a lost cause.
