In World War I, British officer Michael Andrews is captured on the Eastern Front by a group of Kurds. He is rescued by a man who calls himself John Stevenson, though he refuses to tell Andrews his name. The two men have a strange friendship and save a Kurdish village from mass murder. Andrews is injured in the leg and is sent to a British hospital in Cairo. There he meets the nurse Rosemary Haydon and marries her not long after. Andrews and Stevenson have parted ways, but then Stevenson suddenly reappears three years later and announces that Rosemary is his wife. The two friends suddenly find themselves diametrically opposed...
