Speed 2: Cruise Control plot

"As the stakes get higher, the ride gets even faster."

Annie Porter thinks she's finally found a friend who's in a safe profession. After all, Alex is a staid policeman. When she accidentally discovers that he regularly acts as a daredevil as a member of an elite unit, Alex begs for forgiveness. He treats Annie to a romantic, carefree vacation aboard a luxury ship. Six days of romance, peace and relaxation in a paradise setting. It almost sounds too good to be true. And that is it. Once at sea, one of the passengers, computer genius Giger, decides to sabotage the ship. It's up to Alex to thwart Giger's plans and get the ship safely ashore.

Decent step back compared to the first part. The bus has been replaced by a boat, the story is completely absent and it has just become a series of events with no connection between the scenes. Bullock was clearly not ready to carry a movie like this. The film's biggest dead end is Jason Patric, which is not his fault, completely miscast and he gets little to do anything with. The rest of the cast is pretty annoying too. The action still looks pretty good. And the ending is quite memorable, if not for the wrong reasons, so it's not entirely a big disappointment. But you really haven't missed anything if you've never seen the movie.

A film that lacks love and the presence of Reeves.

“Relationships based on extreme circumstances never work out.”

Speed 2 is not a good movie. Yet I was never bored and certainly the beginning is nice. The tension is nicely built up and the atmosphere on the boat provides entertaining scenes. But I missed the chemistry between Reeves and Bullock, and Dennis Hopper as the bad guy. Patric is a jack of all trades and Dafoe is maniacal, but laughable rather than menacing. Bullock clearly can't do it alone. The ending is incredibly long and very poorly done by Jan de Bont, causing Speed 2 to get bogged down in a ridiculous spectacle. Too bad, because the start isn't bad.

Significantly less sequel to the successful Speed. The film starts off slowly, only when Geiger takes control of the ship it becomes a bit more attractive to watch. From that moment on, the tension remains until the end, despite the fact that it is all quite predictable. The scene where the ship continues to sail towards the oil tanker becomes very unbelievable at a certain point.

I could also occasionally get really annoyed by the exaggerated role of Sandra Bullock, which makes it look rather crafted. Jason Patric clearly lacks the right charisma for his role as an action hero, and is not a worthy replacement for Keanu Reeves, who is really missed here.

Conclusion: fairly 'standard' action film that feels forced. Overall, not bad, but totally unnecessary.
