Not much more than Mad Max on a remote island. As simple as the setup may be, No Escape (or Escape From Absolom) has a bunch of cool actors and is quite entertaining across the board. The latter, of course, provided you like the former film and prints like Soldier and Escape From New York. The similarities with Soldier are still quite striking, although it was of course released earlier, but here too someone is dropped in a remote place as a punishment. The title says exactly what it is about, only it is difficult to escape from an island that is hundreds of kilometers off the coast. If there are also a number of rival clans, it doesn't get any easier. It's just Mad Max on an island with a nice climate. Nothing more, nothing less. The action is fun to watch and Stuart Wilson is an unexpectedly cool bad guy. The film also has a nice finale. It leans strongly towards pulp, but the entertainment value is high.

Was indeed known in the video store as Escape from Absolom.

A B-movie, but from the higher segment, with a great A-actor: Ray Liotta, in the lead role as Robbins, a kind of Papillon with military training. The intensity of his performance and his somewhat dark appearance alone (not for nothing that he grew up with Scorcese's gangster film Goodfellas) makes it worthwhile. The shots of the futuristic prisons taste like more because the majority of the print takes place on the primitive island. Don't expect too much action, but on the other hand, a number of characters are developed more than what you normally get spooned into cardboard figures in such a film. Robbins, for example, has quite a bit of baggage that makes him more human. Excellent soundtrack and in terms of atmosphere a good balance is found between a decent dose of grimness and bright spots of hope.

It's a shame that Liotta couldn't make a bit more career after Goodfellas. Only yet to enjoy in Marriage Story as a lawyer. But here really perfect.

Nice film about an island that is used as a prison and where there are only prisoners. The story is pretty thin and the movie could have been shortened a bit. Nice costumes and sets and some nice action scenes. Ray Liotta does a fine job, but Stuart Wilson manages to make a better impression as the bad guy.
