When promising surgeon Joe Bradley is sent by his future father-in-law, Dr. Assigned to the ambulance service, Averill is met with disdain by his fellow doctors and his ambulance driver, Steve Brennan. However, Joe quickly impresses the emergency team with his sincerity and skills. He becomes good friends with Steve, whose years of experience make him a tough but wise teacher. Then Steve is called by Dr. Averill fired for accusing Sammie Miller, a patient, of faking a car accident on behalf of a gang. Joe mediates on his behalf and confronts Dr. Averill when he discovers that some of the patient's confidential medical reports have been leaked to lawyers searching for ambulances on mobster Tom Rourke's payroll.
