Top Gun: Maverick came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest movie hits of recent memory in 2022.
The sequel to 1980s favourite Top Gun was released last summer to enormous commercial and critical success. On a budget of $170 million, it grossed an astonishing $1.49 billion worldwide which is by far the highest-grossing film in the career of superstar actor, Tom Cruise.
The movie was praised for its spectacular action sequences and how it emotionally tied to the first movie.
In Top Gun: Maverick, Pete Mitchell returns to the Top Gun academy to act as mentor and teacher to a group of elite new recruits, led by Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his best friend Goose, who died in the first movie.
The success of the movie has led to natural speculation about a sequel, and when asked by Games Radar about a third entry in the Top Gun series, director Joseph Kosinski replied:
"I think we’re all so thrilled with the success of this that we haven’t really thought about the next step. Tom’s off making two Mission: Impossible movies and Jerry and I are collaborating on another movie . we’re hoping to shoot next year.
"But maybe down the road, when we have a little more perspective on we can ask: is there more to this story that’s worth telling?"
What would a Maverick sequel look like?
One of the breakout characters of Maverick was Rooster, played by Miles Teller. And, the actor himself previously revealed that he has already pitched a third movie in the series - Top Gun: Rooster.
"That would be great, but that's all up to TC," Teller admitted Entertainment Tonight of |Cruise when asked about returning for a sequel.
"It's all up to Tom. I've been having some conversations with him about it. We'll see.
"For him to share Top Gun with me and a lot of these other young actors it's just been such a wild ride, and it's still going,"
Teller previously told ScreenRant:
"I'm trying to get a Top Gun: Rooster. I've been pitching it. We'll see what happens. I don't know. I think it's interesting. Obviously, everybody was begging Tom to do a sequel right after the first one came out. I think this movie puts a nice bow on it; it really kind of wraps it up, but we'll see. I'm available."
