Tom Cruise deserves to win an Academy Award for his performance in Top Gun: Maverick, in the opinion of his co-star Jennifer Connelly.
The sequel to 1980s favourite Top Gun was released in 2022 to enormous commercial and critical success. On a budget of $170 million, it grossed an astonishing $1.49 billion worldwide which is by far the highest-grossing film in the career of Cruise.
It was praised for its spectacular action sequences and how it emotionally tied to the first movie.
In Top Gun: Maverick, Pete Mitchell returns to the Top Gun academy to act as mentor and teacher to a group of elite new recruits, led by Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his best friend Goose, who died in the first movie.
Connelly plays Pete's love interest in the movie, and she was full of praise for her co-star when speaking to Variety, saying Cruise deserves an Oscar.
“He’s extraordinary He does an amazing job in the movie. He’s extraordinary as a person and fantastic as an actor, and I think that he is just perfect. He embodies that character so beautifully, and I think he absolutely deserves it.
“I think that the film is a really well made film and it’s really hard to make a film like that…Also, thinking about Tom’s work, think of the things that he did for that role. Besides all the stuff on the ground and how wonderful he is in those scenes and creating those relationships…I think the relationship he has with Miles’ character is so beautiful and moving. But the work that he did to accomplish those flying sequences, it’s something else”
Will there be a third Top Gun movie?
The success of Top Gun: Maverick has led to natural speculation about a sequel, and when asked by Games Radar about a third entry in the Top Gun series, director Joseph Kosinski replied:
"I think we’re all so thrilled with the success of this that we haven’t really thought about the next step. Tom’s off making two Mission: Impossible movies and Jerry and I are collaborating on another movie . we’re hoping to shoot next year.
"But maybe down the road, when we have a little more perspective on we can ask: is there more to this story that’s worth telling?"
Teller has previously revealed that he has spoken to Cruise and Kosinski about a Top Gun: Rooser movie.
