Following the poor reception Suicide Squad received, director David Ayer assured fans that the theatrical version was not his version and that a much better director's cut existed. And, it seems he is still furious at how much his vision was changed by Warner Bros.

"Hollywood, I tell people, is like watching someone you love get f***** by someone you hate," he said on the Real Ones with Jon Bernthal podcast.

“The big one is Suicide Squad. That s*** broke me. That handed me my ass. Come right off Fury, right? I had the town in my hand, could’ve done anything, and I did do anything. And go on this journey with . And the same thing — authentic, truthful, let’s do all the rehearsal, let’s really get in each other’s souls.

"Let’s create this amazing, collaborative thing, right?

"And then Deadpool opened… and they never tested Batman v Superman so they were expecting a different result, and then they got hammered by all the critics. Then it’s like, ‘Okay, we’re going to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a f****** comedy now.' ”

Suicide Squad director's cut

Ayer previously told his Twitter followers that DC Studios executive James Gunn informed him that a director's cut of Suicide Squad might eventually see the light of day.

"There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people," he wrote.
 
"And I’m aware of there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film. Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn discussion to the 2016 film in a negative way. Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything?

"I have.

"All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.

"In a way, I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey."

Interestingly, in 2021 Gunn directed a sequel to the movie, titled The Suicide Squad. It received much more positive reviews from critics and fans.
