Rian Johnson insists he enjoyed his time making Star Wars: The Last Jedi despite suggestions and reports that he had a "traumatic" experience on the franchise project.
In 2017, Johnson directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the second entry in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It polarised fans, but was an enormous commercial success.
The plan was for him to direct three Star Wars movies, but he would be replaced by J.J. Abrams for The Rise of Skywalker.
Johnson previously expressed pain that the movie didn't earn universal praise, but he has softened on his stance slightly and is thankful he got to work on a Star Wars feature as a fan of the series.
"Oh, f*** yeah. In terms of that, I love 'Star Wars' even more now," he told The New Yorker Magazine when asked about the reports saying he had a tough time on set.
"I think what actually frustrates me is people's perception that I had a negative experience somehow, or people's perception that it was somehow a traumatic experience, or something.
"The reality is that it was a completely joyful experience even through the back end of it, the past few years, the reception of it. No.
"And, when I read what those people were actually saying, I was, like, 'Oh, I completely disagree with this.' They're wrong."
Johnson's Star Wars trilogy could still happen
Indeed, Johnson still wants the aforementioned trilogy to happen which would see him return to helm further entries in the franchise.
At the moment, he is promoting Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and he still has another entry in that franchise to make due to a massive deal with Netflix.
He wants to do his Star Wars trilogy but admits things are a bit uncertain currently.
“I have talked to Kathy about it and we’re still talking about it,” he told Variety.
“I had such an amazing experience making ‘The Last Jedi.’ It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this out and making the next one of these…the answer is I don’t know.”
