Charlie Cox has described how he was told to film his cameo in a very specific way for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In the last Spider-Man outing, Cox appears as Matt Murdoch / Daredevil, in a scene providing legal advice to Tom Holland's Peter Parker. The appearance came around the same time that a reboot of the Daredevil television series was announced after it was previously cancelled by Netflix.
According to Cox, No Way Home director Jon Watts knew that Murdoch's appearance in the movie would lead to some applause and cheers in cinema, so the actor was told to wait a moment before speaking his line after he was featured on camera.
"The way they shot the scene, Jon Favreau says something and then it's my line," Cox said at a panel promoting Daredevil: Born Again.
"But, they wanted me to put the cane down and wait for the camera to come around before I say my line.
"I said, to the director, I said 'that is weird, why are we doing that? Shouldn't I just say my line?' and he goes 'no, people are gonna be really excited!'"
Save Daredevil campaign
From 2015 to 2018, Cox played Matt Murdock / Daredevil, a blind lawyer by day who fights criminals as a masked vigilante by night. Even though the series proved popular with fans, it was cancelled by Netflix after series three due to Disney acquiring the sole streaming rights to Marvel properties.
Following the cancellation, the term #SaveDaredevil began trending on social media.
When asked by Marvel.com about the #SaveDaredevil campaign, Cox said he owes his career to the fans who fought for the show to return.
"There's so much I want to say," he beamed.
"Whatever happens to my career going forward from this point on, I owe most of it to the “Save Daredevil” campaign. That even when I had lost hope years ago, they did not, and they continued to campaign and support. And over the years, I've met many of them, and they're such an enthusiastic, passionate crowd.
"Daredevil is such an amazing character. It's been the great honor of my career to be offered that part and to be able to play him. I've had such fun with it. It's changed my life irrevocably. And when the show came to an end, despite the disappointment of the journey ending, I felt like we'd done a good job, and we had an amazing time and we could only be grateful for what we'd had."
