There are four major new film releases in UK cinemas this week, and we have all the details for you.
2023 has been a massive year for cinema, with the summer period flourishing thanks to the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer. The movies were released around the same time and many cinema-goers actually did the double-feature, which was affectionately named 'Barbenheimer'.
The year has also been impacted by the writer and actor strike in Hollywood, as several productions have faced delays into 2024.
Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon was another huge release as that is expected to be an awards darling.
Barbie became the most successful movie ever directed by a solo female director, earning $1.43 billion at the box office, while Oppenheimer has made $942m. No pressure for the movies that follow then...
New Movie Releases this week
Things are not going well behind the scenes at Marvel as it was reported last week that an emergency meeting was called by chief Kevin Feige to address the dwindling box office figures and critical reception of MCU properties. Variety reported that Marvel are even considering bringing back Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson as Iron Man and Black Widow respectively even though the characters died in Avengers: Endgame. That would suggest there is a lack of confidence in some of the movies and actors currently working in the MCU.
In the middle of all this is The Marvels, the sequel to Captain Marvel.
Official premise:
'While investigating a wormhole linked to the Kree, Monica Rambeau's powers become entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Carol Danvers. The trio team up to determine why they are swapping places with each other every time they use their powers.'
The Marvels cast: Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Park Seo-joon, and Samuel L. Jackson.
If superhero movies aren't your thing, we have Nicolas Cage's latest effort, Dream Scenario. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and has already received acclaim from the outlets that were present at the first showing.
Official premise:
'Hapless family man Paul Matthews finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. When his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.'
Dream Scenario cast: Nicolas Cage, Julianne Nicholson, Michael Cera, Tim Meadows, Dylan Gelula and Dylan Baker.
Anatomy of a Fall is a French courtroom drama directed by Justine Triet from a screenplay co-written by Triet and Arthur Harari.
Official premise:
'A woman is suspected of her husband's murder, and their blind son faces a moral dilemma as the sole witness.'
Anatomy of a Fall cast: Sandra Huller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado-Graner, Antoine Reinartz, Samuel Theis, Jehnny Beth and Sophie Fillieres.
