It seems like Margot Robbie's time playing Harley Quinn may be over, judging by her latest comments.
The Australian has received critical acclaim for her portrayal of Quinn in Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad.
The first Suicide Squad movie received savage reviews from critics, but her performance was considered a standout.
Now, the honour of playing Harley is being passed to Lady Gaga, who will feature as the character in Joker: Folie a Deux. Robbie says the plan for Quinn was always for her to be portrayed by a number of different performers, each of whom would bring something different to the role.
"I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her," she told Variety.
"Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, 'What are they going to do with her?' The options are endless."
Could Robbie still return as Harley Quinn?
Nothing has been confirmed about Robbie's future as Harley Quinn, but she herself would never rule out the possibility of a return and even has ideas for future movies such as a romance between Harley and Poison Ivy.
"I've had enough of a break. I'm ready to do her again," she told ComicBook.com
"I did Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one-year period, but that was a while ago now. I'm always ready for more Harley. I have been pushing for that for years . I cannot tell you how hard I've been pushing for that. I want it too.
"Honestly, when I pictured, I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics. I don't really actually picture an actress doing it, but I agree, that would be so good."
