The Legend of Zelda is one of the most popular video game series in history

The franchise focuses on the character of Link, a young man of the elf-like Hylian race, and Princess Zelda, a magical princess within the bloodline of the goddess Hylia. They fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from Ganon, an evil warlord turned demon king.

There have been 19 entries in the major franchise developed by Nintendo, with spin-offs also available on other devices.

A movie adaptation has been discussed for years, and it has now been confirmed by its creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

“This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who has produced many mega hit film," the Nintendo chief wrote on Twitter.

“I have asked Avi-san to produce this film with me, and we have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production. It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”

Avi Arad, who most famously produced every live-action Spider-Man movie for Sony as well as Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, is producing, while Wes Ball of Maze Runner is set to direct.

Nintendo wary of adapting their games

Nintendo had huge success this year with the adaptation of Super Mario Bros. which grossed an astonishing $1.36 billion at the box office.

However, Miyamoto previously explained why the Japanese company are wary of adapting their games, as playing them is a unique experience for fans.

“The reason we were so resistant and careful to adapt our games into movies is because in video games there is always a player, who overcomes challenges and fights their way through,” Miyamoto told Variety. “Their struggle — redoing the levels over and over — is all part of it.

“Just following the plot points of the video games will never work as a movie. Without the involvement of the player, it won’t meet expectations.”
