Kiefer Sutherland has an idea for a revival of 24 that would see Jack Bauer return to our screens.
24 ran for eight full seasons between 2011 and 2014 and that was followed by a limited series, 24: Live Another Day, which was released in 2014. When we last saw Bauer, he was being taken away by Russians as part of a deal to save the life of his friend Chloe O'Brian, played by Mary Lynn Rajskub.
Sutherland received critical acclaim for his performance as the hard-nosed CTU agent, and won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild award for his performance.
The show received a reboot in 2017 with 24: Legacy, but it did not receive as much fanfare or a positive response as the original.
Sutherland is constantly asked about returning as Bauer, and it seems like he could actually be planning it, as he has an idea that would see a new cast come in to rescue Jack from his Russian captors.
"Howard and I talk all the time and invariably it comes up," the actor told Entertainment Weekly.
"The idea of him being brought back — I'm just spitballing — I think that's an interesting idea. You introduce a new cast of people in their effort to get him out, and it lives on from that point.
"There's a lot of ways to go about it."
The format of 24
The format of 24 had never been done before on American television, with each episode representing an hour of one day.
Sutherland admits he is surprised that the format hasn't been continued with other ideas, not necessarily featuring espionage or terrorism.
"I also think it's such a great idea to take a 24-hour moment in somebody's life that is desperate — and that could be a fireman; that could be so many different circumstances," he explained.
"It boggles my mind that someone hasn't come along and said, 'Well, we need to do this with it.' So whether it involves me or not, I just think that to do something in real time is so clever — difficult, but clever — that I find it kind of shocking that it hasn't manifested itself into something else and/or bigger."
Sutherland is currently promoting the new thriller Rabbit Hole in which he plays a spy who is framed for murder.
