Julia Roberts believes the art of the 1990s romantic comedy needs to be given more respect.
The Oscar-winning actress hit stardom in 1990 thanks to Pretty Woman and would go on to star in two other hugely successful rom-coms in that decade, My Best Friend's Wedding and Notting Hill.
The 90s were seen as a boom period for the rom-com and Roberts certainly played her part in that.
Though rom-coms are generally viewed as movies without much depth, she believes getting them right is an art form.
"I think we didn't appreciate the bumper crop of romantic comedies that we had then," she told the New York Times.
"You don't see all the effort and puppet strings because it's fun and sweet and people are laughing and kissing and being mischievous.
"This is a genre that I love to participate in and watch, and I think they are hard to get right. There is really simple math to it, but how do you make it special? How do you keep people interested when you can kind of predict what is coming?"
Roberts most recently appeared in a new romantic comedy alongside George Clooney titled Ticket to Paradise.
It tells the story of a divorced former couple who travel to Bali together to try and stop their daughter's wedding.
The actress says the script appealed to her as it was "age appropriate".
"It was nice to read something that was age-appropriate, where the jokes made sense, and I appreciated and understood what these people were going through," she said.
"That's what people want to see, your connection to a piece of work. They want to see the heart space that you have for it — not just, 'Oh, do something funny because we love that.'"
