After the spectacle that was Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy has focused on smaller projects over the last year-and-a-bit and his latest movie looks to be an intriguing character study set in a school for boys with behavioural difficulties
Steve, directed by Tim Mielants, is written by Max Porter, based on his 2023 Novella 'Shy'.
'The film follows a pivotal day in the life of head teacher Steve and his students at a last-chance reform school amid a world that has forsaken them. As Steve fights to protect the school’s integrity and prevent its impending closure, he grapples with his own mental health. In parallel to Steve’s struggles, we meet Shy, a troubled teen caught between his past and what lies ahead as he tries to reconcile his inner fragility with his impulse for self-destruction and violence.'
In addition to Murphy, the movie stars Tracey Ullman, Jay Lycurgo, Simbi Ajikawo and Emily Watson.
Steve will be the second collaboration between Murphy and Mielants following Small Things Like These, which was Murphy's first movie after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for Oppenheimer.
After the release of Steve, Murphy will go back into more mainstream projects as he has the Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple on his schedule.
